My interest in photography started because of my yo-yoing. I started filming my yo-yo tricks and was frustrated with the low image quality I was getting. I was also looking for a new career path and decided to give photography a try. That was one of the best decisions I ever made. Through my interest in photography, I began studying graphic design. In a sense this entire portfolio is a result of me yo-yoing.
The photos of the yo-yos themselves had quite an intricate setup. This was especially true for the photos where I was actively doing a trick. Nearly all yo-yo tricks require the use of 2 hands. Since I am both the subject and the photographer, I had to get creative with the setup. For the image in this grid, I used my phone as a remote trigger in one hand and balancing the yo-yo in the other. I could not simply set the camera on a timer because my camera did not support continuous autofocus when a timer was used. However, I could autofocus from my phone’s remote trigger app. I had to be very quick with this because all yo-yo tricks are dependent on the yo-yo actively spinning. Once I finally got the shot I was pleased with the results. This photo on the left page is one of my favorite photos I have ever taken.
